This synthesis of the district case studies evaluates the success of SCALE's theory of action across districts, examines variation by district, and offers lessons learned for policy, practice and research. SCALE had a substantial impact on the instructional guidance of every district. The most comprehensive set of influences occurred in Los Angeles , with effects registered in both mathematics and science across all five dimensions of the SCALE theory of action (system leadership, curriculum, PD, monitoring, and accountability/ equity).
LAUSD also had the largest number of active partners assisting the district, including the Institute for Learning (IFL) at the University of Pittsburgh , the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (science immersion units), the local SCALE IHE partner (CSUDH), and Vanderbilt University (Andy Porter). To date, LAUSD was the only SCALE partner district that saw substantial implementation of the science immersion units. Influences in the other districts tended to concentrate in one subject matter (math in Denver and Providence) and involve one major assisting partner (IFL in Denver and Providence, WCER in Madison).
