The case study of the Providence Public School District (PPSD) evaluates the impact of the System-wide Change for All Learners and Educators (SCALE) partnership on the four Goal 1 dimensions of: the core teaching system (curriculum), professional development, monitoring, and assessment/ accountability. PPSD is a mid-size school district with a student population that is overwhelmingly poor and minority.
Since 1990, student population in the district increased by 40 percent, regular education enrollments declined, and Special Education and English Language Learner enrollments increased. Over the past six years across numerous changes in central office leadership, the district worked to develop and sustain a shared vision of challenging science and mathematics content and effective pedagogy.
